As a 4k player who used to hover around the 3.5k area and struggled to move up, an important tip people have to keep in mind, is to never stop farming. This may seem pretty obvious, but you'll be surprised at the number of people who don't follow this concept. Whenever a gank fails, go back to farming. Don't roam around pointlessly, especially if you're the carry and the success rate for kills is low.
I've seen 3.3k-3.5k players running around looking for kills after getting a core item (like diffusal on Riki) and end up underfarmed lategame. I've also seen players camping in lanes and under towers, if you are a carry, you should be farming, when a fight happens you can always tp. If you watch pro streams, you will notice that the pro players are almost always farming.
Obviously this tip is situational, if your enemy has 1 hard carry, and you have 2-3 cores, then it is in your best interests to constantly gank their carry or intimidate them so they can't farm. Also, map awareness is crucial, don't farm blindly. -coffeehippo
